question about heart rates...

Hi everyone,

so...for the past few months, when i do turbo jam my heart rate is in the 180's and sometimes low 190's (during the turbos) but is at like 160-170 during the regular cardio zone.

well the last couple days have been weird. i've been pushing myself harder than usual and have been STRUGGLING to get my HR up to 180. It's like the numbers keep going lower even though I'm pushing harder. What does that mean? I'm ASSUMING it means my hearts getting stronger but i want to check with you guys because you guys know so much. :-)

Thanks!

The more you exercise the healthier your heart gets and the more exertion it takes to make it pump hard. If you have been doing the same type of exercises for a few months, try changing to something else for a bit. The healthier and more in shape you get the harder it will be to get your heart rate up.

yeah. that's what i thought. the only thing that still gets my heart rate up is running. :-) so i guess i'll have to do more of that.

another question though...how high is your HR supposed to go when weight lifting? the same as cardio?

I can't help you with the weight lifting thing as I don't do it. Sorry. I know there are bunches of people on here who do and I am sure someone will pop in here somewhere to help out.

I don't believe heart rate is important with strength training as it is with cardio but if someone else has heard differently let me know. The website below has tips for strength training.

Your heart rate won't stay up that high when weightlifting. Strength training is very different. Your heart rate goes up during the bursts of energy you use to lift and then comes back down while resting between sets. It isn't sustained like when doing cardio. Keep lifting though! Building that muscle makes that metabolism go faster even when resting

Wow 180-190 is HIGH!!! That is good if it is taking more to get it higher that means your heart is getting stronger. You should also take less time to recover.

yeah, i noticed my recovery time is insanely different. usually after doing a turbo in turbo jam i'd be SUPER winded and the recovery part would be WAY too short and now it seems way to long. :-)
