Net Calories?

Is it really that important to have your "net calories" at around 1,200? I typically eat around 1,500 and burn around 600 when I workout, leaving my "net" at somewhere around 900. I've heard from some people that it doesn't matter while others swear if your net isn't high enough you won't lose as much. Any opinions?
