Hey everyone,
I am going to be losing weight but mostly I want to tone up and gain more muscle. I am going to start lifting but wanted to do the insanity workout soon to get my strength up a little more. My question is, when is the best time to drink your protein shake? I have heard a couple different times so I just wanted to get a general idea of what will benefit my body the best. Also, If you dont usually have protein in the morning for breakfast would drinking a protein shake in the morning be helpful as well?

Thanks for your help!

Don't rely too heavily on protein shakes. I personally wouldn't take more than one a day, but that's my preference.

The general consensus is the best time to have your protein shake is after the workout. You'll want the shake to be high in protein and sugar (fruits are best). My favourite shake:

    1 cup milk (I use 1%)
1 scoop whey protein isolate (for me, about 36g protein)
    1 tbsp peanut butter
    1 banana
(optional, but sooo good) 100g strawberries

    Total: 49g protein, 445 calories (w/o strawberries)

I do the 100% whey protein from GNC
    with 8oz Almond Unswettened Milk

    all together about
    185 calories

i do it once a day for either lunch or dinner
  • Thanks guys! I will give those a try! :)

I would recomed buying them online because GNC and other stores are really expensive. Also, I sometimes prefer protein bars instead of shakes. Sometimes the drink doesn't really make me feel full even though they run between 250 and 300 calories. The bars are usually about the same but they tend to satisfy me more than shakes. Make sure to watch the carbs and sugar because some of these bars are as bad as a snickers!
