HRM pros...do you really need electrode gel?

About to possibly purchase a Polar FT4 HRM online and something popped up recommending I buy a tube of electrode gel. Is it really necessary?

I never have used it, I just wet the strap.

nope not at all, you just need to dampen the chest strap and it's fine.
