I want to tone

How many of you came in here just to tell me toning is a myth? :drinker:
Anyhow, what I really want to do its get more muscle definition and build more muscle. I'm a female in my late 20s and fairly close to my goal weight. I do mostly cardio now, but want to incorporate more strength training. I finally joined a gym so I can have access to more substantial weights than the 15 pound ones I have at home. And I am currently waiting for the new rules of lifiting for women to arrive in the mail since everyone seems to rave about it so much.
While I realize the book may answer some questions, I really just wanted to start off gathering some advice and tips from others on strength training - heavy programs. Do you recommend protein shakes or other supplements.....which ones and why? How often do you do cardio and have rest days? Are there things you found you really needed to avoid or add in to your diet? really anything you think might be helpful. The internet is always full of conflicting information and I know what works for some people might not work for me, but I figure its good to ask people who have some experience with it.
Thanks in advance!
