I sprained my ankle last Fri. I was on crutches for several days. I'm still having some pain. What are some exercises I can do? How long will I be out from running, Insanity, etc?
I am not a swimmer, so that's not an option

What did your doctor clear you for?

well, i personally would tell you to rest it until its no longer sore, otherwise you can do more damage (take it from someone whos been there and done it through sports!). sometimes we have to let our bodies take a break to recover.

If you can, go to the doctor to check it out. To have pain after several days sounds within the normal range, but you might need X-rays, an MRI or PT. I would definitely rest it and not stress it.

Yup. Even if it's a drag.

At this point I think you can start range-of-motion exercises (google them...there are a lot of good options), but I would check with your doctor. A lot will depend upon how severe your sprain was. That you were on crutches makes me suspect it was grade 2 or 3.

Almost 2 years ago I gave myself a grade 2 sprain during a trail relay...and continued to run nearly 10 more miles of the race (I took one for the team, heh). I wasn't good about icing or elevating or staying off of it in the first 48 hours and I'm paying the price today. My ankle is still somewhat weak and unstable and my ROM is pretty bad. I will likely never be able to run off-road again.

Depends on the severity of the sprain, and being in crutches suggests a slightly more severe sprain than the average sprain, the OP may be in pain for another week or longer!

Also- are you going to be given physio? i know where im at, grade 2 and 3 sprains tend to end up getting physio to help.

just stay off of it. let it heal, i know your wanting to get back to your stuff. but your body needs time to heal that sprain. try to stay off it for a little. alternate ice and heat. what that will do is contract and relax the muscles. witch in return will slowly work the muscles you sprained with out pain. iv been in that boat. don't push it it will only make it worse.
