How accurate are HRM's?

I bought an HRM today because I have seen so many things on here about them, but I'm not sure how accurate they really are...

occasionally a guy posts on here that worked for polar -says the one that communicates with a chest strap is more reliable. Don't know what brand or style you bought. I have a Polar with chest strap I use on occasion that I think is reasonable in its results. I use a body media fit Link all the time. I find that to be very good.0
