Sudden dizziness while standing up?

Anyone else experienced this? It came on very suddenly and only when I am standing up. I think it might have to do with yesterday's low net.. I have sat down and drunk some squash. Any other suggestions?

    Weight/Height or BMR/TDEE information? http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/

    What was the low net?

I sometimes run into this if I've had to much/little sugar/iron or very little food.

Are you anaemic or do you have low blood pressure? Both would cause this.
  • yep. it will happen if you havn't eaten enough or your fluids are low. Drink more water throughout the day, eat little meals more frequently and up your overall calories a bit. Those will all help.

My current calories are fine, no need to up them, but yesterday I only ate 969 calories as I wasn't very hungry. I have had my normal breakfast this morning. I just feel a bit shaky now :(

More water! And more food would help too. Get up slowly. ;)
  • It could also be an inner ear problem caused by a virus, unrelated to your exercise/diet, like labyrinthitis or BPPV.
  • that used to happen to me before i started eating well. it may be due to low blood pressure or not enough fluids.

If it continues it could be iron. Do you eat enough iron enriched foods?

Thanks guys for all your answers. I don't think it's an iron problem or anything long term. I think it's just because of yesterday's low net. Anyhoo, I'm fine now :-)

When people present that symptom, it is generally a dip in blood pressure or sugar levels. If your calorie intake was low, I would hazard a guess that you have low blood sugar levels. Blood pressure can also take a natural dip when we are at resting, and suddenly standing up can get a rush of blood to our brain, making us feel a little bit woozy.

Nothing to worry about UNLESS it is a regular occurence. In that case you will need to get your blood pressure checked by your local health care professional.

Can you tell I'm at work as I write this?

did you have a lot of coffee? I will sometimes have a problem if I drink too much caffeine now.

More salt required in your intake. An isotonic drink perhaps rather than just squash.

Postural Hypotension is the medical name for your problem - low blood pressure when standing up. Google is your friend.

I suggest you consult with your physician to rule out any medical issues that may have arisen.
  • This happened to me a few weeks ago... I talked to several people about the causes and a few days later I realized I had been getting an ear infection.

This can be caused by either a rapid drop in blood sugar, or a rapid change (rise or fall) in blood pressure. Neither is very good.

That sometimes happens to me if I just get up too quickly. I do occasionally get diziness, but that's because i'm prone to passing out and my blood pressure suddenly goes through the floor for no apparent reason. The docs think it's connected to my migraines though - they're not exactly sure...

    yes.

I think it was that, honestly, I do. I don't think it's a major problem, I just wanted suggestions to combat it. But it went away by itself.

Given that yeah, the below 1000 number was definitely a shock to the system. I wouldn't worry about it if this doesn't happen when you eat enough. Hope you feel better soon! Eat foods with lots of vitamins!
