I drive on weekends for a period that ranges between 5-10 hours off-roading on sand dunes which involves manual gear shifting all the time and manouvering around the terrain at relatively high speed compared to rock crawling.

I wonder how can I calculate the calories burnt per hour for such activity.

Good question. I was wondering the same thing about riding on the back of my husband's motorcycle. Everything I found said basically that I was burning about as many calories doing that as I would sitting in an armchair, but when we get back from a 4 or 5 hour ride, we're both asleep about 30 minutes after we get home, and I ache all over the next day. Somehow I gotta believe I'm burning SOME calories riding back there.

There's a difference between isotonic (constant resistance), isometric (constant contraction with no change in position), and isokenetic (constant speed) activity, Basically I think we're in mostly isometric activity here. . . if anything, any exhaustion is more or less a product of coping with the positive and negative g. . . which again goes isometric-ish.. . . and dehydration.

My opinion: not many if at all.

Driving a stick shift vehicle burns 114 calories in one hour of constant shifting and driving. Sounds like just what you are looking for. Hope you have fun driving and also exploring the great outdoors. Have you ever been to the Sand Dunes National Park in CO? I love going there and go almost each and every year.

Thank you guys for the replies. Driving on the sand dunes in the "Empty Quarter" of Arabia is nothing like Glamus/California or anywhere else, you can check some videos on YouTube by searching for "UAE Desret Challenge" or watch some of my videos there under "Khaiwi62" this would give you an idea about the effort and possible calorie burn I anticipate.

As mentioned by "W2bab" after the activity is over am dead tired and I have body ache the next day hehehehehe.

"Tonnina" I really wonder how the 114 calories per hour is accurate. I have not been to CO, but last year spent three days on the rock trails of MOAB and next month will be there too for two days. Wish you too good time exploring the outdoors.
