Ears Ringing
I know its not really related to MFP, but I figured with the number of people here, maybe someone can help. My ears have been RINGING for months now. I know, I should go to a doc. But I keep thinking I will get better without it. It all started 3 1/2 months ago when I stopped smoking and my diet changed a few weeks later. I don't understand because everything I have read is that smoking can cause ringing, but not from quitting smoking. Don't know if it was just coincidence with the smoking deal or not. I have tried drops and had no results. Does anyone have any suggestions.

According to my pharmacist sister-in-law, Excedrine, asprin, Motrin and Ibuprofin can also cause this. Do you use pain releivers often?0

Could be tinitus (TIN-uh-tus), a ringing in the brain caused by damaged ear follicles! I have it due to too many rock concerts and loud noises at work. It is a constant whining high pitched ringing and it never goes away. I hope you don't have this.....0

Get a hearing test. Ringing in the ears is usually a byproduct of hearing loss. I know what I'm talking about, I'm an Audiologist0

I don't take aspirin or that stuff hardly at all. The noise I am hearing is the constant high pitched RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING that is non stop 24/7. It changes loudness and if there is a lot of background noise then I really don't notice it. But sitting at work in the quiet or at home watching TV, it gets bad. Usually I can drown it out with headphones and the radio.0

The last several year I have noticed slight hearing issues. Constant loud noises bother me like concerts or loud bars. I can sit in the woods and hear a mouse fart 100 yards away, but I have a hard time hearing my wife say something while driving in the car.0 -
I have tinitus, the constant loud ringing in my ears. I did see a doctor about it, and was told it could be because of my years of ibuprofen abuse. They said it could clear up, or it could be permanent. I've had it for over 5 years.
When it first started, I would cry a lot, because I really thought it was going to make me insane, but over time, it's just something I've learned to live with.
Try getting a white noise machine, which is particularly helpful when trying to sleep.
I feel for ya and I hope it clears up for you!0 -

I'm the same way. Loud hurts, but I can quiet noises very well. I've decided to call it my "bionic hearing".0 -
I encourage you to go to a doctor. I had mild ringing in my ears and had a hearing test. It turned out everything was fine and it's gone away now, but the audiologist told me that there are lots of health conditions that can cause ringing, like high blood pressure. (I can't remember what other conditions he mentioned.) Best to get it checked out.0

It sounds like tinnitus. Certain drugs can cause it, loud noise, and just aging in general. You should get it checked out to see if there's a cause that can be eliminated. If not, there are methods you can try to mask the noise or to decrease the anxiety it causes. I highly doubt it has anything to do with quitting smoking.0

Hello... I'm exactly in the same situation as you did. I quitted smoking 20 days ago... and about a week i started to have my letf ear ringing. I went to doctor and doctor said my ear was normal, and the audition test gave slight bellow normal earing levels in two specific frequencies.
Doctor told me that this is not related to quit smoking. But I really have doubts about that.
I'm getting scared, because this is really a bad feeling. I have this constant noise, and the sensation of clogged hear all the time.
Msmaster... In your case did it disappeared? Thanks a lot for your reply. I don't find that much on the internet about this.
I'm sorry about my english, since I'm Portuguese.0 -
Sounds like tinnitus. Can be caused by a few things from ear damage from loud noises to substance abuse, and some people just seem to get it. Most of the time doctors can't give you a reason. I have it constantly, have had for about 8 years now. There are days when normal sounds make me wince, too, and certain noises reverberate something in my right inner ear constantly.
Nobody knows why, but I'm finally accepting it now.0 -
I know I'm a bit late to be hitting this thread.
Anyway, I've had tinnitus for about 11 years now. When it first started, I just wanted to blow my brains out. It was driving me crazy. I cried a lot. My doctor said it's usually not known why it starts and sometimes it does stop, but there's no cure for it.
I wasn't a smoker at the time the ringing started. Some time after the start, I became a smoker (not for the 1st time in my life). Then, 3 months ago, I quit smoking. I have noticed that the ringing seems to have doubled in volume.
I haven't mentioned it to my doctor in years, as he'd told me in the beginning that it wasn't curable. Even tho he told me that, I still tried things I'd heard about. Nothing worked. It's just something I'll have to live with. :ohwell:0 -

I've had tinitus for as long as I can rembmer. In fact, I didn't know it wasn't normal until I was about 10 years old and was talking to some of my friends about it. I had it checked out and it wasn't related to hearing loss and there was nothing they could do about it. Since it's always been there, I've learned to ignore it. Plus I usually only notice it when I'm in a quiet setting. That's one of the reasons I like to sleep with a fan on.
Hope you get things checked out and there aren't any problems. Good luck.0
