The amount of calories burned is based on your intensity. Intensity is best measured by a heart rate monitor, but, failing that, you can go by speed (i.e., how fast you were walking). If you were walking on a track, it's easy to figure an average speed and then enter it into the MFP log based on the generic info they have here (walking is broken down by speed). If you're not on a track (i.e., you're walking around your neighborhood or something), the best thing to do is to drive your route with your car and figure out how far you went. Then, you divide the miles you walked (based on your drive) by the hours you walked and there is your speed.
I'm averaging 5.0-5.2 mph and in an hour's time, I generally burn 400-600 calories. You could burn more, because mine is based on an exercise metabolic test that I have done (in which I found out my body is VERY efficient at burning calories--that is, it burns fewer calories per minute than I'd like it to :grumble: ).
I hope this helps you out!

P.S. We have a thread that you might want to join called "Beginners Walking Challenge". We report our weekly progress every Friday and would love to have you!0 -
there is also a web site mapyourrun.com.
I walked my nightly route in about 20 minutes yesterday. I have always thought it was 2.5 miles, but knew it couldnt be with that time. So I mapped it and it is 1.36:grumble: :grumble:
BUT I was so very happy that I have gone from walking this route in 45 minutes to doing it in 20. That is about a 15 minute mile.
I guess I will just have to do it twice tonight!!
Good luck and have fun:flowerforyou:0 -
