Help! I'm in a mental rut

Hi All,

I have been working very hard to watch my calories and exercise for the last 5 months. I have steadily been losing 5 lbs a month, and my eating has been very realistic and sustainable - but the more I realize how well I've done, the more I seem to ease up on my goals. I haven't been eating as well as I should or exercising as often as I used to. No! I want to keep going! But I can't shake this mental rut! I am a runner and not part of a gym, so all these rainy New England days recently don't help much, either. My goal is to lose another 5lbs before May 20th (wedding engagement photos!). Any words of encouragement? Has anyone done anything in particular to break a rut?

I'm not sure I actually have advice, but I can commiserate. I've definitely been there. I 'weigh in' on Thursdays and this past Thursday showed a 3.3lb loss. I was so excited and happy and proud and glad to see my hard work paying off. So, Thursday, I go out to dinner, eat half a pizza and drink a few beers. I deserve it, right? I lost 3.3lbs. I woke up Friday feeling like garbage and just had to remind myself that while pizza and beer are fine, I can't think of them as a reward for losing weight. It doesn't make any sense.

I'm not saying you're doing the same thing, but this whole thing is so much more mental than anything else. All you can do is keep chugging along and remind yourself how great you felt when you were more consistent and how badly you want to achieve your goal for your engagement photos.

And sometimes, 'fake it til you make it' works too. Good luck!

Hey. Maybe it would help if you set some goals outside of just weight loss? You could set a fitness goal; like you could decide "I want to complete Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred" or something along these lines. I think this might help to keep you motivated by providing something other than just the number on the scale for you to focus on. Good luck and best wishes!

P.S. - I'm sure your engagement photos will look fabulous! =)

You're doing SO WELL!!! You're daily habits have completely changed and you've learned so much in such a short period of time, it's bound to happen. You keep consistent and that's what really matters, the long haul. Sometimes we all get down and have relapses (you've seen mine), it only means you're human
