But what about my pretty dresses?

I now weigh less than I have in about the past 8-10 years and I feel like I've made good progress. But I'm really starting to have a problem with my wardrobe.
I love wearing dresses and my wonderful mother has over the last 5 years or so been wonderful enough to indulge me and get me designer dresses when they go on sale. I've been nearly the same size for the last 5 years and take good care of my clothing so I still have many of those dresses. My sister being a little more fasion forward than me goes shopping and cleans out her closet regularly. Since we were about the same size I would get her last season dresses and hem them to fit.
I've now got a closet of a couple dozen dresses that I used to love to wear but are now each several sizes too big for me. I'm a poor college student, I've barely been able to scrape up the money to buy new pants for work and that's with me continuing to wear shoes with holes in the soles (yes literally) and poking holes in the belts I have because I don't have the budget for new ones.
I'm torn. I can sew but not well enough to feel confident taking in designer dresses. Though, I feel like at the end of semester it would be nice to reward myself with having a pro tailor them but that's $50 or so a pop. Though I would really like to hold on to my old favorites, I wouldn't object to buying new dresses but once again they're $50 or so a pop.
I AM SO CONFUSED (and sick of wearing work pants and baggy t-shirts because they're all that will fit!)
Anyone have advice?

Sell your old stuff on ebay? If they're designer brands they might sell fairly well.0

Great idea! The thought never occurred to me. Thank you for the suggestion!0

You may also go to a seamstress and have her take your dresses in. i know I've done that and continue to enjoy many of my dresses still.0

You stated your mom sometimes indulges you. Make sure she knows your new size as it changes so you don't end up with more stuff that is too big.0

Consignment shop? You can also find designer clothes there your size to replace your old ones0

Goodwill...my mother and I shopped there for years...I still wear some of her goodwill stuff.0 -
If you have local friends on facebook you might ask them where you can get alterations at a good price. Consignment is a good route unless you are already out of clothes today0

Here is what I would do. Go second hand shopping for new clothes (work clothes and everyday clothes) so you can have some new (old) clothes that fit.
Go through your dresses and pick out your top favorites, sell the others on ebay as someone else mentioned and use any money you make off from them to take in the dresses you want to keep.
You might also try selling them at Plato's Closet if you have one near you (and shop there too, good prices on gently used clothes).0 -
As others have suggested, but your dresses in a consignment shop, and look for new dressed in thrift stores and consignment shops. You may get lucky and find some great sales in your favorite stores, too. Enjoy your success!0

If you can sew, you ought to be able to alter most of them. Do some research on techniques, check blogs, talk to a couple of seamstresses (if they don't mind sharing trade secrets), and start with your least favorite dress as an experiment. Might turn out to be easier than you think.
I have the same problem, I'm running out of clothes that aren't huge on me, but I don't even really know how to sew! I did recently figure out how to alter a simple a-line skirt to make it fit again. If I can learn, I'm sure you can too.
It's a good problem to have, though, right? Congrats on your success, and good luck to you!0 -
I'm having a similar problem. My wardrobe has fit me for a long time and I've gotten rid of my newer (fat) clothes and kept my old, longstanding favorites. But now even my old and new favorite pairs of jeans are getting baggy, especially in the booty (an area that I'm proud of, I don't want to see it go!). It's nice to lose weight but also kinda...bittersweet0
