Hello fellow MFP users! My name is Nathan and I am aged 27. I have been on here for a few months and am just now introducing myself/filling out all my profile info. I'm at work and SUPER bored today.
I have recently decided to change the way I live my life. I never really had a weight problem, but I did find out a couple years ago that I have/had high choleserol when getting a physical for life insurance. At my age I found this unacceptable and quite shocking. I'm 6'2" and was probably around 210 lbs at the time. However, I did nothing to change it either. haha. I did lose a little weight since then, but nothing major. Only a few pounds. So at the beginning of this year, 2012, there was a biggest loser contest at my workplace, and the chance to win a big 'ol pot of money. I wasn't that much overweight, but since it was based on % lost instead of total pounds, I decided to give it a shot. I figured all of the really fat people would give up after a couple weeks and I would clean up if I hit my goal. One of them did not quit and ended up killing me, but good for him. I ended up placing 2nd in the men's category, so I did not win the $400 pot. I won a $5 subway gift card instead! oh well. But I did lose 19 pounds (9.5%) before it was all said and done. (only 4 months time) So WIN, WIN right?!
-After this somewhat successful experiment of trying to lose more weight than very obese people, I decided to keep up with the healthy eating and regular exercise. I love the way I look and feel and its only going to get better! Also since I was eating better and exersizing, I decided it was time to stop smoking cigarettes for good. About 7 years ago I thought it would be a great idea to get addicted to smoking just to see how hard it is to quit. Personal experiment of will power if you wanna call it that. Dumbest idea I ever had! I smoked a pack a day for 6 months and then tried to quit. Key word "TRY." Now while I did cut down a lot, I was still a smoker off and on for the past 7 years. Mostly socially, especially if I was out at a bar or drinking beer at all. I can say now that since meeting my super supportive girlfriend and knowing how good I feel from excersizing and not feeling like death, I have not bought a pack of smokes since November! It's still super hard sometimes tho. We're all going to die someday, but why hurry the process.
-Since I can now breathe properly...I recently found a new appreciation for running. It's become something I actually enjoy. My girlfriend and I recently completed our first 5K and we can't wait to do more. Here is a list of the ones we are doing this year. 10Ks will be for next year
* Pittsburgh Pirates "Home Run 5k" (complete - 26'30")
* Pittsburgh "Run for Your Lives 5k"
* Washington DC "Color Run 5k"
Hopefully I will see some of you there!
Feel free to add me as a friend, and I'll do my best to show unconditional support to everyone that is sincerely trying to live heathier lives!
