Walking Shoes

The closest thing I own to athletic shoes is a pair of lightweight hiking shoes. These are obviously designed for the trail and are a bit stiff for exercise type walking. I used to spend a lot of time in the wilderness and these shoes date from that part of my past life.
I am wondering what you experienced folks can recommend for reasonably affordable good quality walking shoes. Eventually I hope to be inquiring about running shoes but for now walking is about this old man's speed.

local sports stores can usually point you in the right direction. Running Specialty stores may also be able to help with walking shoes as well and usually can be reasonably priced as long as you don't need any inserts or anything. Good luck to you i can't wait to hear how it goes!!!0

I bought my New Balance shoes at SportChek for around $85 Canadian. They've been great so far and were pretty easy to break in. My only complaint was with the original laces - round and came untied very easy. I bought new laces (oblong, have a seam) at Wal-mart. The money isn't just for getting a name brand, but a better quality shoe. These don't have mesh, so I can stamp around in puddles if I like.0

When I started I went to a local runners store. They can determine how your foot strikes the ground and recommend the right shoe. I'd been wearing Nikes for years. They put me in Brooks and it made all the difference. I was 335 pounds and was very hard on my shoes. I started jogging at 300 pounds and I go through a pair of exercise shoes about every 3 months. I run or walk almost day and only use my shoes when I exercise. THe shoes from the running store were not much more in cost than the Nikes I switched from. Hope this helps0

Thanks. I guess I need to find a runners shop and talk to them. Good advice, talk to the pros. I am just concerned they would try to up sell me some absurdly priced shoe I don't really need, but I guess that's up to me to not be suckered.0

I thought the same. But I think the prices were as good as a big box store. And the salesman knew what he was talking about. Go to a running store and get the right shoe for your needs and gait. Once you know size and type you can buy them anywhere. I change out my sneakers about every 6 months.0
