Ok - I've been doing the 17 Day Diet and at the same time I am training for a half-marathon. On the 17DD, you don't eat many carbs - 2 servings of fruit a day, but with veggies etc., I'm usually around 100g of carbs a day. As my training runs get longer (up to 14.5 km this week), what can I do to appropriately fuel up? Do I eat at a a specific time - if my run is Friday at noon, do I eat some extra carbs Thursday night or Friday morning? What would be the most effective way to fuel my distance run? Please and thank you!!!!

I really have no idea. I had been eating a banana about 1 1/2 hour before hitting the gym for my run. This week I decided to try V8 because I am having some low potassium issues (heart palpitations). So far, so good. I have my energy still and today no heart palpitations. But I don't know if I was doing a "real" run, like a half marathon what I would eat or when I should eat whatever it is.

Have you had any trouble with the lower carbs? Some people can do distance running just fine without carb overload. I am one of them. So before you jump off your diet and start monkeying with your intake - why not try what you are doing already and see how the longer runs feel for you.

With regards to how to fuel before and during long runs.... it is VERY individual. I personally like to eat a peanutbutter and banana sandwich about an hour before a long run and I snack on Clif bars during runs that last longer than 8 miles or so. The general rule is to fuel every 5-6 miles or every hour.

Once you start experimenting with things - you will figure out what works for you. Everyone is different!
