If you belong to a gym many have pull-up assist machines. Or you can buy bands and wrap one end around the bar and then kneel into the other end and that will help add some assistance.

You can also do partials on the chin-up bar and just work your way up.

Someone basically holds your feet or legs and helps you.

If you do not have anyone to help you, you can try negative pullups.

These will also help you get closer to your goal of doing a pullup or chinup by yourself.

Negative pull-ups or chin-ups are basically when you start in the up position of a pull-up or chin-up and lower yourself down slowly.
You can use a chair or jump up to the bar and lower yourself down.

    I usually do a 5 second count.

Try to do enough repititions that you can do 4-5 sets atleast. So if just 1 rep, do that 1, wait atleast a minute, then do another 1, repeat 4 or 5 times. You'll be pulling yourself up onto that bar soon enough.
  • If you're at home using a chin up bar, you can put one foot on a chair. This works the same as someone holding your foot. Use that foot to lightly push your weight up. Use your foot less as you get stronger. You can also try using elastic bands, stretching from the bar to your bent knee. The bands help you start the pull, but you have to pull yourself up the rest of the way. You can also try inverted body rows (horizontal pull ups) to build up strength for a regular pull up.
