What does it like exactly taste like? And what brand is the best to buy?
I've always wondered because I myself am not a big meat eater. I eat turkey and the occasional steak but that's it.

    tofu has no 'taste' it takes on the flavor of whatever you cook it with.

    pretty much any brand, I prefer the kind that are sold in Asian grocery markets, and it depends on what you want it in.

    Silken=soups broth
    soft=noodles/ramen
    firm/extra firm=stir fry

    and then there are other forms you will see if you go to an Asian grocer (there is a more firmer/spongy type it has a dijon mustard color to it and looks like chopped up sponges, the flavor is more pronounced and I don't personally care for it)

    firm/extra firm needs to be taken out of the package, and drained, put it on a cutting board, and place a dinner plate on it, and something heavy on top for 15-20 minutes, this helps squeeze out excess water. chop and add it to your cooking last-otherwse it will crumble, tofu is fairly delicate.

    If you go to the recipes section and ask, I'm sure people will have some great suggestions for you. I just toss my tofu in stir fry, or my bean thread noodles with soy sauce, sesame oil and hoisin sauce with green onions. I like my foods pretty simple.

    Good Luck!

    I prefer tempeh about a million fold over tofu. Its a fermented soy product, high in protein (22 g in 4oz serving- with 12 g of fiber), which has a nutty flavor and a much more dense texture than tofu. My grocery store stocks it in the refrigerated case nestled in the produce section.
  • There are conflicting reports that soy causes fertility issues in women and all sorts of other things. I eat it on occasion and am healthy so far.

    Just some info on it. I read somewhere yesterday that certain types of soy products are better for you than others but I can't find the article now. If I find it I will post it.

    As previously stated tofu takes on the flavor of what it's cooked with. I will use TVP (textured vegetable protein) and make "meat" for tacos. I love soybeans too.
