So, I've really never ran in my life for fun but after researching the benefits and always seeing the people wo run in my neighborhood and around campus, I think I want to pick up a running habit this summer, maybe even do a 5K. Since I am a begginer, what should I know? Any helpful tips would be good. Also I am still in my 200's. Is that too big to run or should I wait until I've lost more weight?

As long as you get the right shoes, and bra, you'll be fine - DON'T run in normal gym shoes.

I'd download the Couch to 5k and start from there - it's a walk run program that will get you running before you know it!

Get a couch to 5k program. You can download an app for it or find info online. It will take you through a walk, run, walk, run cycle increasing your running time and decreasing your walking until you can run for 20-30min without stopping.
Anyone can do it, you will be surprised how easy you find it and how quickly you progress.

Look up the Couch to 5k programme, download the podcasts to your mp3 player if you have one, and get going! Oh, and read BerryH's tips for runners - it's a blog post lurking about here somewhere, absolutely priceless info!

    Happy running!
  • Get fitted for running shoes - it is worth every penny!!!

Couch to 5k sounds awesome. I think I'll definitely look into that. Thanks everyone!
