I have posted this to my new MyFitnessPal blog as well, but I have to take a moment to crow a bit and revel in my success.
Just over a year ago I made a choice to fix a weight and fitness problem I had been seeing develop since I left the Marine Corps. I had reached 267# and was still putting on weight and losing muscle. Today I am at 167#, 100# down from my starting weight and under my target weight of 170#. I have gone from a 48" waist size to a 30"; from 2XL and 3XL to medium shirts and I am in the best shape I have been in since I was still active duty. I feel great and my martial arts have improved with my stamina and strength. Special thanks to Power of One Sport MMA and Fitness and Coach Porter for helping me reach my goal. And thanks to the folks at MyFitnessPal.com for developing a great tool for calorie counting.
The real beauty of doing the calorie counting thing is that you never "Fail" ... I had days when I went over my target by Hundreds of calories, but never got discouraged because I could look back over the months and see that if had no real effect on my overall progress. It kept me motivated. I used the MyFitnessPal app on my iPhone to keep track of my meals, and my progress became a challenge, like leveling a character in a video game
My next goal: Find my maintenance calories and continue with strength training.
