I see on here all the time how people are using their HRMs to help acheive your weight loss goals- my question is how, exactly?

I have an HRM and am familiar with HR zone training for endurance sports- i.e. keeping your HR under your anaerobic threshold to extend your aerobic endurance- but I don't exactly get how so many people here are using it for fitness other than endurance training. Can you fill me in? I would love to get more use out of mine!

Or is it like an extra advanced calorie estimator?

I use mine for a better estimate of calories burned in my workouts. I log everything I eat, so makes sense to also know how many exercise I burn, so I can keep things in balance. I also like seeing where my heart rate is during workouts and runs, so I know if I should push harder or ease up. Gives me my average heart rate and highest heart rate too. But mostly I wanted it for calorie burn.

Mostly I use mine to get a more accurate measurement of how many calories I'm burning. My Xbox said 100 calories and MFP said 150 for an hour of sweating misery. I got a Polar FT4 and it says I burn 400 calories in that time (450 if I really push myself). I'm honest about my food. Now I can be honest about my calories too.
