What is bumping

Ok I have a silly question.....What is bumping and why do ppl do it?

    when someone posts on a board it bumps it back to the top of the first page.

    most people dont go further then the first page on the forums so when you want someone to see the board you bump it :)

    I think they do it to foster a conversation on a topic they find interesting.
