Wearing out a routine

If you use a DVD or some routine too often will it stop being effective? I've been doing Killer Buns and Thighs (Jillian Micheal's) a lot lately but I try to switch up the levels, do the more advanced moves and add on weight. I'm worried since I have been using it so often it won't help me anymore. I wanted a new leg workout routine but can't seem to find any good ones to use instead. :grumble:

I am wondering the same thing ... but i have also heard that you need to change it up every couple of weeks as you ... in a way ... kind of build up a resistance to it ... but more in the sense that your body needs a shock every now and then and you use different muscles doing different things even if it is just a change in incline ... worth a try

It is good to switch things up, your body will begin to adapt and it will become less effective. Something is still better than nothing, but if you can switch it up every 4-6 weeks.

I've heard you need to change things too. I've been walking 12 times a week thinking that was a great effort, but just one hour of dance class showed me that some muscles have been neglected. I wouldn't have thought there was that much difference between walking/running and dancing, but it seems there is.

yep, the body finds ways to maximize efficiency when it comes to burning calories. Do the same movements in the same routine and the body will get used to it and then get more efficient. Call it muscle memory if you want. Even small changes can shake it up though. Do a different routine. Do the same routine in a completely different order or backwards. Anything to shake up what your doing on a regular basis. The commercials for P90X and Insanity like to call it muscle confusion, but really it's all about not settling into a routine for a long time.

I think it kind of depends on what you mean by 'effective'. I have been doing the 30 day shred for months, and I can still feel myself getting stronger. Eventually I will be able to do the whole thing advanced moves, with 5 lb weights. At that point, if I want to get stronger, I will need to do something different, but continuing with it I should be able to maintain my strength.

If by effective you mean the most efficient fat burning work out, then yeah, switching it up with other stuff would probably help out. I alternate 30DS with your shape fitness evolved, to keep things interesting and to confuse my body. :D

I read in Men's health magazine that you should switch up your routine every 6 weeks. Whether it be different exercises, different weight, or different reps.

i thought about this too but then the 3 workouts are different so i think that would class as doing 3 different routines as they would work diff muscles and in diff order. I think it is great because you can do same thing as in sense of doing video that you enjoy but it still mixes itself up every 10 days or so. :)
