I believe counting calories rather than points is a more effective way of losing weight and keeping it off. If someone thinks in "points" they may not realise how many calories their food actually has. Good luck!0

I must admit counting calories seemed daunting to start with but its so much easier that anything i have ever done before (esp if you have a 'posh' phone with the scanning app on it)

Welcome Wimbledongal! I hope MFP works well for you... as it has for so many of us!! I have done WW, but I agree with you, calories are easier - and MFP goes with you literally everywhere!! I have the app on my PC, my Blackberry AND my Ipad. No excuses for not tracking :laugh: :laugh:0

I LOVE MFP, even have hubby on it now :-) Joined in January but did not really take it serious until about midway through March and since then it has helped me shed 11lbs! And educated me on how to make better food choices.0

I like to think of moving from WW to MFP as "graduating." WW does equip you with the basic skills to do it on your own; they just dress it up with effective marketing and Jennifer Hudson.
Let me just put on my flame suit before I point out that the Weight Watchers' "Points" system -is- basically counting calories plus macronutrients. It's been years since I was on WW, but IIRC the formula for calculating points takes into account something like calories, carbs, fat, and fiber, right? It just distills all of those things into one (low) number, which is why it's effective for so many people - it simplifies things immensely while teaching you how to balance a food budget the same way you would a financial budget, which is the key here.0 -
Good for you! Calories are universal and in the real world as opposed to the weight watchers world, so when you reach your target you can carry on logging and stay fit and healthy. MFP has a great community spirit - if you'd like to add me as a friend feel free :flowerforyou:0

I usually go over protein. I have no problems. I have been maintaining my weight since January. My Mom is a Weight Watcher addict and has been since the 70's. She still battles with it. Welcome and good luck!0

MFP wins over WW for an obvious reason -- IT'S FREE! I also think it has better tools and features. So I think you will be very happy and successful with the change.0

I agree. I tried WW and SlimmingWorld for years. Calories is so much easier. It's still hard work, but it's worth it! Feel free to add me!

The "points" system always struck me as bizarre. As easy as it is to get calorie information, why needlessly complicate it using a non-standard measure?0 -

I have only been on MFP a week and have noticed I eat WAY too much protein for someone who is not exercising daily. Eating too much protein can cause upset stomach and can actually attribute to weight gain. After all, people use protein to bulk up, so if that's not your goal, try and cut back. I have noticed that I generally NEVER eat all my calories, but my protein allotment was gone by midday or afternoon. Now I eat less much protein and have dropped 3lbs this week. Try eating less of it, and see if you notice a difference...0

hello and welcome! I discovered mfp in aug 10 by error, i downloaded the app onto my phone and promptly forgot about it. I was about to sign up to WW online when one of my friends told me about mfp. So i didnt sign up to WW and logged on here instead and have never looked back! plus its free and i dont need to pay someone to weigh me!
Mfp has been great, ive learnt loads throughout the past 15 months. Mfp taught me to eat better and to exercise. Ive also become a runner because of it. The key is to use the forums and add as many friends as you can! every little helps and it keeps you motivated!0 -

I am a previous "lifetime member" from WW. I was WAY under eating for years on the points system, messed me up big time. I recommend using another site to determine how many calories to eat because MFPs goal are usually way too low. www.fat2fitradio.com is a good one to start.0

Good luck to you!! I'm doing WW and myfitnesspal at the same time but giving myself a little slack with using the calories instead of points and just eating WW meals once in awhile. I've lost three pounds so far and I don't feel as much pressure. I think you'll like it alot!!0

I agree 100%. I went on Weight Watchers 3 different times and had success in the beginning (on the old program), but was unable to keep the weight off for this reason. I joined Weight Watchers in January 2011 when they just released the new Points Plus system and achieved no success. This is a perfect example. On WW, a banana has 0 points; but a medium size banana has 110 calories. On WW you can eat as many as you want, but if you eat 2 or 3 bananas a day, that's up to 330 calories. I started faithfully using MFP in February and I've lost triple the amount of weight in the same amount of time I spent on WW. Best wishes and I hope you enjoy MFP.0 -

I also quit WW online in favor of MFP. The points system ended up being too abstract for me and I never got to the point where I could look at a food and make an educated guess about the points. I always found it much easier to count calories. Here's to hoping MFP works for you!0

Hello - somewhat new to my fitness pal. I jump back and forth from WW to starting this. I realize I need to focus more on the amount of carbs i'm taking in daily and WW doesn't really doesn't focus on that. Plus I love the app for my iphone its so convenient and easier to use than WW's app. So hoping I can get serious and meet a few people and help motivate each other and reach to our goals!0

I lost about 70 lbs on WW a few years ago and hit the mother of all plateaus - had an injury that messed with my exercise, and a lot of stuff going on. Held steady for a little while and then gradually it all started creeping back... and then a year and a half ago my mom died and I just had to grab the end of the rope and hang on for dear life.
The good news is that I didn't gain back EVERYTHING - just most of it. Tried getting back on WW last year and finally figured out that the way the program is structured simply does not work for me any more. Far too much emphasis on WW products (which are often heavily processed) and not enough on "real food."
I'm working on bringing my diet closer to the earth, closer to the farmer, closer to the natural state of the food. I feel better when I eat this way, whether I lose weight or not. I use a Fitbit and MFP now, and it's a learning process. I don't own a scales right now so I don't know for sure whether I'm losing, but I know that every day when I sit down and figure out my calories and activity for the day I am focusing on the stuff that is going to help me get healthier and stronger, and that can only be a good thing regardless of what the numbers on the scales are doing.0
