calories vs. fiber and protein

so when i went for my physical a couple of weeks ago i told my doctor about my frustrations with weight loss. she said i should focus on getting lots of protein and fiber and to not be as concerned with calories (obviously i shouldnt go nuts, but calories shouldnt be my focus). this is a totally new approach for me....any thoughts on this??
