Appear thinner

I'm 5"4 and weigh 160 lb but everybody's first guess at my weight is always 130. I asked a friend and she said her first guess was 130 because she took into account that I have larger hips. She was surprised when I told her I weigh 160. My bmi says I am overweight, but I didn't know that bone mass had anything to do with it. Does this mean I'm not overweight?

BMI is a terrible tool... It doesnt account for muscle differences very well... Once I hit my goal weight I'll be 10-15% Body fat but will be obese according to BMI... Try measuring yourself via bodyfat instead and see what that looks like.

There are many factors to consider. When I aim for good posture, I naturally appear thinner for example.
Also, BMI does not factor in muscle mass, you could have a lot of muscle and weigh more because of that.
I'd suggest to get your body fat percentage measured, that's probably the most efficient way to determine whether you need to lose weight/shape up or not...
