Cardio and strength intervals

i know I have read about your body reacting differently to cardio and strength training. Does this mean that DVDs that are intervals of strength and cardio are a bad choice?

If you've been completely sedentary then you'll probably make some strength gains from doing something like P90x but in general, no those videos are not good for developing strength. The amount of resistance and rep scheme used does not improve sufficient stimulus for real strength gains. I know a couple people at my gym that took time off from the gym to do Insanity and P90. They lost a lot of weight but they've also lost a lot of strength.

I either do interval strength training of interval cardio, I don't believe in mixing cardio and weight work in the same workout. Your muscles metabolize differently depending on how you are working them and you won't get an optimal result in either category if you ask your muscles to multitask in a marathon workout. I like doing cardio in the morning and strength in the evening. I do cardio every day and strength two days on, one day off so I'm always doing something. And honestly, I think it's nice to break up the workout throughout the day. You won't get "gym burn out" and you metabolism will benefit immensely.

They are a great choice. Interval training is good for you! But, if strength training is your specific focus, they are not going to be enough and you will need more. You can continue interval training with more weight tho... 2 days a week I work with a trainer, in a gym setting and this is what we do. My strength has increased tremendously. I have access to a lot more at the gym to include in the intervals than I do at home.
