I don't wear shorts at the gym, nor do I have great abs (working on it!) but I love lifting weights with the boys!!

    Pics are in my profile.

    Exercises:
    Upper / Lower Split - Mon/Tues & Thurs/Fri.
Focus mostly on compound movements as they're great for strength gains, and do isolations too to just help with the big lifts, and that extra bit of muscle when I'm bulking.
Heavy weight / low reps. I move up on 6-8 reps depending on how comfortable I feel with the next weight up. Usually things such as bicep curls I move up on 10 reps because they're so damn hard to move up on!

47 here, will be 48 next month, would really LOVE to have one of the rock hard bodies that I see at the gym in the skimpy outfits, but with everything going south, I'll just have to do the best I can with what I've got..... not going to bash myself though, I think I look pretty good for my age, I've worked hard to get here too..... work with what you have to get where you want to be.....every "body's" different... :-)

Oh don't think you're off the hook of being "hated" just because of your age!! I bet you're super hot!

I am the youngest at my boot camp class but I'm also the last one to finish the workouts and I have the least endurance in terms of running. I totally envy some of the older women in there because they kick butt every time!

NurseCarolyn- Looking great!! Thanks for the motivation!

There is a girl like that at my gym.... she's unbelievably fit... and has to show it off wearing as little as she can. I'll get there...one day... and then that WILL be me slutting it up at the gym!!!

      :drinker:

Women would rule the world if we all didn't hate each other so much...

This. It's not even funny to joke about.

I want to be the "HATED" girl. =D

Ummm look at your body!! You totally ARE! LOL :D

Aww. Thanks. I am still a work in progress. I only wear that because I work out at home.

Just go H a m. That's what me and my work out bestie do! No need to hate. We work out with the "cool kids" guys and girls alike and, everyone is in varying degrees of "good shape" but, no in our group judges each other, we're very supportive. It's the other people who yell "*****!" at us that miss out. (not cool btw)

I would just offer to find out before you flip out. Otherwise you risk looking like a fool for no reason. Most people are happy to share their work out plans. Luckily my gym offers it for free.

PS- I got your sense of humor.

I'm not gonna lie, but I feel awesome when I'm squatting 65 lbs and I see a tiny girl curling 5 lb weights. I wish I could go over and say, hey I know you can do better than that. :)

Awww I am totally the tiny (height-wise) girl with the baby weights XD Alright, you've inspired me to up my weights a bit next time I try lifting :)

Up the weights, up the weights, up the weights!!

If the weight is any color other than silver or black - avoid it. There is no reason to go light on the weights. Your body is stronger than you know and you can prove it to yourself. Start Lifting! If you want advice on form find a trainer - look it up online, pick up "New Rules of Lifting for Women", but please don't lift the barbie weights.

ummm im not wearing the short shorts or having rocking abs but im over lifting with the boys.....

That counts :) I'm so afraid to even go to that side of the gym on my own, so I totally admire girls who go over there and actually know what they're doing!

I done this for the first time today, we have a weights room that is separate from the normal fitness suite, to say it is intimidating is an understatement but I got one of the fitness instructors to show me the ropes and went solo today. butterflies were crazy but I just pretended I knew exactly what I was doing and because I have been doing body pump for the last 2 years I was confident in my moves etc

  • Well, my tips are to really push yourself. don't be afraid of looking stupid, getting bulky, or what the next person is thinking about you. Do what is going to get you the body you want and if someone has a problem with it then can stick it you know where. Ask for help from people who know what they're doing, ask questions when you're confused, and just keep at it! :)

Tinkr and frilly, where are your pics?? You ladies are HOT!

I think some of you are afraid to own up to the fact that you're actually the ones turning heads at the gym

Be proud of what you've accomplished!

OK...so no hating!! haha...and I do not consider myself one of these girls, but I am 42 and have had 6 kids. I also gained 50-60lbs per baby.

I teach Zumba 8x/week. My songs are cardio and a lot of calisthenics, so we can build our muscles....I squeeze a lot into one hour.
    I eat 1600-1800 calories per day and 100 carbs/day 150/protein per day.
I cheat on Fridays and eat whatever I want.
I still have stretch marks and loose tummy skin, but it is getting better. i will never have that awesome pre-baby belly...but what I have is fine.
I do planks and ab vacuums.
I eat coconut oil and I dry brush my skin.

LOL. You are funny. I don't have any new pictures.

My tip would be to do intervals of full body exercises and plyometrics with weights. That's what worked for me so far. I am currently adding more weight lifting. Right now the heaviest weights I have at home are a pair of 20lbs dumbbells, so that's what I am using for my squats and deadlifts, and shoulder and bench presses are just a pair of 10lbs. I think I can squats and deadlifts more, so I am looking into getting a barbell and weights. I am also doing negative pull ups since I want to work on my back muscles. I don't have a very good weight training plan yet.

I am kind of in the same dilemma with upping weights at home, although my husband said that we can get a barbell and weights if I wanted yesterday since he is now getting back to working out again. Maybe some household items, like bags of rice and use it like a sandbag?

Properly applied bodyweight can give the exact same results as a gym membership. Trust me, I do both. I've got a strength training oriented bodyweight workout wrote up on my profile if you'd like to try it out.

Negative pull ups are where you start in a pull up position and slowly lower yourself. I do it because I can't do a pull up, and people on here told me that a negative pull up will help work the muscle. I want to work up to doing a pull up. =D

The only weights that I lift are dumb bells (8lbs). Every thing else I do, is from my own body weight. Sure, I am not as muscular as some other women that lift heavy, but I have a limited amount of time to workout. I can not teach my class, then lift weights...I have to get home and be mom.

Maybe get some DVDs to do at home. I have heard great things about JM buns (or something like that). I bought Brazil Butt lift and use a lot of those moves in my class. Just do some research and you should be able to find things that will build your muscle, but not require gym equipment.
OK...another picture to show that I have muscle....it just is not that big. I am laughing because I look silly flexing!!

I agreed. I think it really depends on what you are looking for, in term of your physique and strength. I don't think you need to constantly up your weights, if you are looking to maintain your physique.

Properly applied bodyweight exercises are brutal...and put totally different kinds of stress on your muscles than weights. I started with bodyweight for 3mos last year...lost 40lbs. I still go back to my old bodyweight routine for a challenge...seriously. Even with as much stronger as I know I am...the bodyweight stuff...it's seriously rough sometimes.

Working StrongLifts 5x5 is turning me into a beast and I can't wait to show up the boys. I head straight to the back room of the gym to 'my spot' on the barbell.

    Current lifts:

    (Current PR's for full 5sets of 5reps)
    Squats - 85lbs
    Overhead press - 55lb
    Bench press - 55lb
    Rows - 60lbs
    (DL's only 1set 5reps)
    Deadlift - 105lbs

not in the hated catagory by any stretch but I do this! And before I slacked off during the holidays I was totally on my way, now I'm starting over and finally getting that energetic feeling back that I was getting before and the sensation of instant firm muscles after a workout.
My stats are 51 yrs of age, 5 kids oldest 25 youngest 6
    Squats: 125
    OHP: 55
    Bench: 95
    Rows: 95 and holding
    Deads: 140

Thinking of starting a cutting cycle at the end of May.
    and go here: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/4601-stronglifts-5x5-for-women
all of us who aren't working out at home are in the freeweights section of the gym with the boys!

I may not have the abs and not expecting to see any for a while until I start cutting but I'll get there. I love working amongst the guys. Makes me push myself harder. Now I just feel so...out of place with the women at the cardio machines. Haha

I just make sure to make progress of some sort with weights each week and work everything once a week. I'm not throwing cardio in except 2 times a week until I end my bulk. :P

I have no experience with that book personally, though I've heard it's a good read. Also...believe me when I say I'm the first to tell you a gym membership, and heavy compound weights are the way to go if you want super fast results. But for those who don't want to hassle with it, you can do incredible things with your body using only bodyweight, and you can see results very quickly...it just takes more time reach the higher visible levels of fitness.

bodyweightculture.com is an EXCELLENT resource for bodyweight exercises, along with advice and answers to any other questions you might have. They really do have their own world...and it's a freakin ripped one lol.
