net calories

I am new to Myfitnesspal and have done great so far. I have lost 7 pounds my first week. I have been exercising almost daily. I even went on a 17 mile bike ride yesterday. I am signed up for a triatalon in July and am so excited. I have a long ways to go and want to really understand all I can do to better myself. I know this may sound stupid but I dont understand the whole net calories thing. Also should I be eating the calories earned daily through exercise or is it ok not to. I know it says that if you dont eat all your calories you could put your body into starvation mode. Please explain all this to me.

"They" say to eat back your exercise calories. I struggle to get up to my pre-workout calorie goal every day.

Others (who aren't part of the "they" above) say that "starvation mode" is a myth: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/175608-starvation-mode-is-a-myth-the-science

Welcome Michelle, glad you are here. I don't eat all of my exercise calories back. Keeping my net calories lower than my goal has payed off for me. I have not hit too long of a plateau as of yet, and I don't really buy into the starvation theory either
