Exercise help for the injured!!!

HELP!!! I fell last week and broke bones in my foot. I will be on crutches for the next six weeks. That means NO TREADMILL!! I really can't afford to slack off on my exercise. I finally got myself motivated again and don't want to lose my groove. Are there any exercises that I can do to keep my aerobic exercise on track?

If you have access to one, a pool is the perfect exercise for all occasions (well, that and assuming you aren't actually in a cast or other device that can't get wet!)

Barring that, you can focus on upper-body and core workouts to the best extent possible. Even just waving your arms around in the air can get a good sweat going and get your heart rate up, so get into an argument with an Italian or a New Yorker. :)

If you belong to a gym, some gyms have a hand bike, which is great cardio. If not, maybe you can get your doc to prescribe physical therapy, and the therapist might have one. Or just wave your arms around :)

I had two injuries last year, a broken wrist and a badly sprained ankle. By far, the ankle was harder to work around. Trying to learn how to use the crutches was just about my only real workout!

There are a bunch of chair workout DVDs available, but I didn't find any I really liked. My physical therapist had an arm bike and I used that. Also, there was a DVD workout a while back, probably hard to find now but I think it was called AeroAbs. It was a rather tough workout done entirely on a workout bench (or step) lying on your back with your head, shoulders and back supported. Also, maybe some floor pilates routines would be doable.

Good luck and well wishes for a quick recovery!
  • Thanks for all the advice...I'm definitely going to try the "waving the arms around" thing....I did find that walking on these crutches is a SUPER cardio workout. Even the front parking space at Walmart isn't close enough...WHEW!!!! And thank you for the well wishes. I'm ready to get back on my feet...err...both of them anyway. thanks!

    What about a rowing machine?

I would try mat Pilates - It's originates from physical training and your not on your feet.
