I see so many people here that drink protein powder shakes. Do you drink them in the place of eating food? What brand, in your opinion, is the best, and why?

I'm not familiar with these products, so please, no snarky comments.

Thanks!

I just recently started using protein powder because I was having difficulty getting enough protein into my daily diet with my crazy work schedule. I usually make a smoothie with it by adding frozen fruit and almond or soy milk. You can also add yogurt, peanut butter and anything else that you want. I personally don't like it with just water but that's my personal taste. I have it after my workouts to promote the muscle growth and repair. I don't use it as a meal replacement. There are other products that work better as meal replacements as they have a balance of protein/fat/carbs.

Here's what I found when I was doing my research:
    1) Stay away from protein concentrates. You want a 100% Protein Isolate as it's better for you and will be faster absorbing.

    2) There are a lot of brands on the market and you will get many opinions... ultimately, you will need to read the ingredients and decide for yourself what you are willing to spend. Some are very expensive and some are super cheap but read #3 before making any final decision.

    3) Do the math for the amount of protein per serving. You want a powder that is at least 85-90% protein per serving. That means there are less additives and more of the pure protein. If the product is cheap but only has 60% protein per serving, are you really saving anything?

I decided that I would rather spend a bit more to get the best product I could so I wound up buying Dymatize ISO-100. It is 90% protein per serving and has no carbs. It blends well into my smoothies and gives me a super dose of protein per serving (25g). I even spoke to my trainer about it and she said that it is one of the best products out there but often too pricey for most people.
