Not Understanding Net...?

I feel like an idiot...
MFP set me at 1200. I bumped it to 1300 because I think 1200 is too low (if it's not, I'll drop back down). Can someone though explain to me what net is? I'm not understanding this at all?
And, for the stupider question...
To burn 500 calories, does that mean cut 250 from the diet and exercise out 250, or are we really supposed to burn 500/day AND suppress caloric intake?

Net is calories eaten minus calories burned.
MFP already works out your deficit, so don't worry about that. You just need to net the goal MFP gives you, or you give yourself.
So, if you're aiming for 1300 a day, and burn 300, you'd need to eat 1600 in total to net that 1300.0
