metformin making me very hungry

Last Monday i was placed on 500 mg of metformin once a day for my pcos. Near the end of the week i noticed i had a large increase in hunger no matter what i ate. Last night i started taking 1000 mg and noticed my hunger was out of control and no matter what i ate the hunger would not subside. Has anyone had similar issues and does this problem go away? I also have not experienced the normal side effects. I would like to keep taking it b/c my doctor seems to think it will help with weight loss. I however, can not keep feeling like i am starving all the time.
