Pedometers and HRM's

I got a pedometer (sp?) at Wal-Mart, but I'm sot sure I am using it right. I measured my pace, but the steps measured are sometimes off by 3 to 8 steps. I went to the beach one day, and from my apartment to the start of the beach was 400 steps. I walked a long distance down the beach and checked and it only said 450 steps.
I have a bit of a pooch on my tummy, so could that cause it not to read steps properly? I clipped it to my jeans pocket. Are we allowed to carry it in our hands or will that mess up the reading? It was $7 at Wally World, and you can hear a rattle as you walk. Is this one more accurate than the other kind? (They didn't have too many choices there.)

HRM's have interested me, and in another thread, someone said the machines we work out on are not accurate in calories burned. Should I get one? Do they all work the same? I don't have a job at the moment, so I can't get too expensive....

Any info would be great!

    HI,

I haven't had any luck with pedometers but for $25 I have loved my Wal-mart Sportline Heart Rate Calorie Monitor watch. I don't think it does distance though. If you are really worried about burning calories to get rid of the pooch then this is a good investment. You put in some profile info in the
beginning and it figures what your heart rate would be at maximum. You then can press your finger
to it and it'll give you your heart rate which is how it figures your calorie burn along with the time you've spent. I think it's pretty good. One day I will buy a better one. Good luck.

Sounds perfect for me! I can ditch the pedometer and get the watch instead. Thanks!:flowerforyou:
