I don't eat enough protein because I don't know what foods are protein rich. Any suggestions for snacks etc.? Thanks a thousand.

  • Meat, fish, eggs, cottage cheese, textured vegetable protein, and Greek yogurt, and beans make up the bulk of my protein intake. I'd be careful with eating too much tuna, though, for mercury reasons.

Almonds (with nuts, raw is ideal)
    Cashews
Quinoa (have to cook it but I snack on a small serving on occasion)
    Beef Jerky (mind the sodium)
Hard boiled egg (again, cooking ,but seriously if you can pack it or have some ready, just season with some celery salt and munch)
    Greek Yogurt (Chobani, Fage etc)
Hemp Hearts (Sprinkle on yogurt for extra protein and nutrition)

    Store bought convenience stuff:

    Clif Builder Bars
Muscle Milk (can buy in bulk at Costco)
  • Nuts are a pretty poor source of protein to be honest. 160 calories worth of almonds only provides 6 grams of protein, you'd be better off eating... well, a lot of things, as far as protein concerns go. Not to say nuts aren't good for you, but they're more of a fat source than anything.

I avoided listing fish cuz well, not necessarily "snacks" unless you munch on small portions of sushi often like me.

Eat the *kitten* out of some tuna and salmon if you like it.

    As for mercury...

...yes the Republic of Korea and Japan are currently crippled by their high consumption of fish and all the rampant mercury poisoning.

(Try to get your fish fresh and don't worry about stuff like that)

Lol you serious? First of all, not all fish has mercury. I'm only warning against tuna, though swordfish and shark are other common concerns. Freshness has nothing to do with mercury content either.

I'm addicted to low-fat string cheese these days. As someone else put it, mind the sodium. But I eat very low salt anyway so I can afford a little sodium in the cheese. and it's so yummy :-)

That and greek yogurt is PACKED with protein!

The freshness was a general recommendation because fresh fish is delicious and generally of higher quality/taste. The part where I was dismissing mercury concerns further was "don't worry about stuff like that".

Most mercury concerns are overblown, and the levels needed to poison or affect you would equate to you eating a metric *kitten* ton of tuna in one day.

I mean Christ on a segway...Sir Isaac Newton consumed LARGE levels of pure mercury and it took forever for that *kitten* to keel over.

Add a daily protein shake to your diet, they pack a big protein punch with about 20 g of protein per serving. I love Unjury protein Strawberry Sorbet, chocolate and vanilla.

    Hard Boil eggs
    Peanut butter
    Nuts
    Cottage cheese
    Greek Yogurt
    Protein bars
    Tuna
    Beans
    Oatmeal (great for after workouts)
  • There are numerous studies showing the dangers of mercury in particular fish. Your choice to ignore it or not. And yes, it would be impossible to eat enough fish in one sitting to see any ill effects due to mercury, but the nature of mercury is that it builds up in your system over time.
  • Thanks everyone, there seems to be loads of food there that I'd never even thought of! Does anyone know if there's truth in the stories that protein shakes can be bad for your liver and kidneys? Just wondering before I go invest. Cheers.
