Accuracy of MFP Nutrition Goals

I've been reading the forums a ton and most people agree that weight loss really starts in the kitchen and is complimented by high calorie burning exercise. So basically, I need to be as careful as possible about what I eat. But, my general question is, what do I eat? I mean, i understand the basics... I should pick carrots over french fries and the more common sense stuff. But, are the protein, carbs, fat, etc. goals on MFP accurate to the point that I'll be doing the right thing in the kitchen to support my weight loss goals or is there somewhere else I should read or figure out what I should be eating? I've started going to the gym and actually really enjoy it, but I dont want to be going with no hopes of losing weight because I'm mistakenly not eating what I'm supposed to!
