deloading and taking breaks

How often should a beginner (less that six months) to strength training take breaks, and how does one know when to take a break?

I'm mainly asking because I've been diagnosed with a hip bursitis and ordered off lower body lifting for a week. Since I'll be focusing on upper body in that time, I want to know if I should take a break from upper body following that and resume both, or skip right ahead to resuming both.

It depends on how you're lifting. I've seen certain training systems like 5/3/1 and the Westside method that incorporate deload time into timeline. Other than that, you'll know when you need to take a break because your body will tell you. If you're really starting to feel like you need a break then maybe take a deload week. Although a deload week doesn't mean you stop lifting altogether, just lighter weights and low volume.

    I had to deload OHPs.
Felt like I was trying to lift the roof off the house.

Alright then, I'll be back to full body workout weeks as soon as I can then.
