I just started Zumba and really like it, but feel like a different type shoe would make it easier. What type shoe do you wear?

When I was doing zumba, I used dance shoes. Flexible like gym shoes, but they had suede or some other type of material on the soles that helps you slide better. They are not the best looking shoes, but they work great.

You're welcome. Are you a size 10? I will send you mine  I can't do a lot of the cutting moves due to a torn meniscus. It has been repaired, but not going to risk it again.

. That is so nice of you! I'm only a size 9. I've been using my New Balance, and have a heck of a time being able to MOVE!

Great question! Be very careful. I am currently suffering from tendinitis in BOTH of my knees from Zumba, and I believe it is from wearing the wrong shoes. I took classes 2-3 days a week for 2 1/2 years and wore Nike trail running shoes. The soles are wide for stability, and they have traction. This is the opposite of what you want when you are sliding side to side and shaking your hips. You want something light, that doesn't "stick" to the floor, and thinner soled. They make shoes especially for Zumba and dance fitness classes...jazzy looking things. I didn't like the look of them and was afraid I'd fall on my butt without the stability of my running shoes. I wish I could take go back in time and get the right ones. I've had to forsake my beloved Zumba for a while, until I heal these tendons (Pes Anserine, or "Goose's Foot"...on the lower inside of the knee joint, that connects several muscles in the upper and lower leg). It's really depressing to walk into the gym with all my former Zumba mates, and head upstairs to the elliptical (I HATE it) instead.

I love Zumba! Right now, I wear New Balance cross trainers. I've worn Nike Musique IV in the past, and those are great. Zumba has their own shoe, Z-Kicks/Z-Tops/Z-sneakers. Skechers, Ryka, and Bloch all have "dance sneakers." Basically, you want a shoe that will accommodate slides, turns, and lateral movements. Running shoes are designed to move forward only.

I am wearing Jazz dance shoes. Because of the impact, I wouldn't necessarily say they are the best shoe ever but they do let me move and they don't constrict my foot as much as tennis shoes tend to (which aggravates my Morton's Neuroma). I've recently read that New Balance has a line of shoes for that issue so I'm looking into that. But for all the shoes I've tried thus far, I've been decently pleased with my Jazz shoes. They were fairly cheap (about $20) so it was definitely worth the try. They have been surprisingly comfortable thus far. Just keep in mind that what kind of shoe you most benefit from also depends on your own foot history.

FYI, mine are made by Bloch.
