Running targets LBM?

Ok so a lot of sites for muscle gain and lifting reccommend not running as a form of cardio. Running for me is bad as i have bad knees, but it seems like the only exercise i enjoy doing.
not the point
I don't have an exact source but lots of website prefer he use of ellipticals, rowing machines, or bikes over running when it comes to preserving LBM. Is there any truth behind this? Ill do some searching and try to find a source, but i guess they make a good point that runners are quitelean and skinny, and even ina cut session, many bodybuilders dont choose to run.
any elightenment?

I think it is more about the distance or duration, than the specific activity. CFE used to have a better explanation, but they modified it a bit http://www.crossfitendurance.com/faq0
