New to Kefir

I've lately been using Kefir in my smoothies, but the cost of redi-made has made me decide to make my own. So...I tried making Kefir from a mix today and totally screwed it up. First I forgot to refrigerate the package of freezedried starter that I bought 2 days ago. But I didn't realize it until after I boiled my milk. Then I read online that the package I bought has terrible reviews online and they all recommending getting a starter from someones live culture. Is there anyone here from Michigan that wants to share?

My cousin said that she know people that make yogurt from goats milk and that maybe I could find a goat farmer to help me out. Kefir from goats milk sounds really good! Do we have anyone knowledgable about Kefir out there?
