So I have lost my first 20 pounds, and this weekend I ran my first 5k! I am ready to dive into those really scary looking weight machines that encircle the cardio area at my gym. I would love some tips on what to do! I go to my gym so early in the morning that there are no trainers working to give any tips and i dont exactly have the $ to pay for PT sessions..

Thoughts? Input? All ideas greatly appreciated!

    Don't use the machines.

I started with the barbells not knowing anything about weight training. New Rules of Lifting for Women (search the forums, plenty of info) has been a great intro to the weight room and I'm loving the results you get from compound lifts and heavy weights. Plus...picking up heavy s*** is fun.

choose free weights over machines. It forces your body to use more muscle for stability. Lift a weight that you can do between 8 and 12 reps with, no more. Do not be afraid of getting big. You won't.

thank you all so far... i can lift a weight and put it down multiple times, but i dont know how to lift them. does that make sense? I know how to do a tricep extension and a bicep curl, but that is about it! Any websites that show the various exercises?
