Several that came to mind that have already been mentioned:
Everybody Hurts - REM
Lightning Crashes - Live
Tears in Heaven - Clapton (about his real son dying tragically, which makes it worse)
Some that haven't been mentioned:
Cat's in the Cradle - Harry Chapin (can't listen to this one since my dad died)
All Apologies - Nirvana
Pennyroyal Tea - Nirvana
Jeremy - Pearl Jam
Stan - Eminem
The Future - Leonard Cohen
Father of Mine - Everyclear
Stay Together for the Kids - Blink 182
Adam's Song - Blink 182
Scorn Not His Simplicity - Sinead O'Connor
Country Death Song - Violent Femmes
Why Would I Cry For You? - Sting
Sober - Tool
Goodbye Blue Skies - Pink Floyd (OK....the whole entire The Wall album, but this one is the most directly sad)
Eleanor Rigby - The Beatles
Mother - John Lennon
My Mum is Dead - John Lennon
The Needle and the Damage Done - Neil Young
Sleeps with Angels - Neil Young
I could keep going. You could say that I'm a bit of a fan of sad/depressing music.0 -
Oh shoot, how could I forget "Dance with my father" :sad:0

Oh, and
Love is a losing game by Amy
Especially when sung by this dude

OMIGOD, I WAS TOTALLY TRYING TO REMEMBER THE SONG I FORGOT!0 -
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought of George Jones' He Stopped Loving Her Today. Saddest song ever.
Both Sides Now as sung by Dave Van Ronk - Seriously. I never realized how sad this song was until I heard him croak out each verse like he was heartsick and alone.
Sylvia's Mother by Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show and Operator by Jim Croce - what is it about phone booths and heartache?
Virtue the Cat Explains Her Departure by The Weakerthans - it's from the perspective of a fictional cat (who also narrates another Weakerthans song Plea From a Cat Named Virtue). I'm not a cat person at all but when they get to the line "But I can't remember the sound that you found for me", I can't help but feel the loss.0 -

The saddest song in the world is Little Susie by Michael Jackson.
You are a MONSTER if you don't think that song is sad.
I'm going to go cry in the corner now.0 -
And this.

Fills me with a sickly, sweet, sad feeling. I remember once sitting in the park in the pouring rain, sobbing my heart out with this playing on replay in my ears.0 -

I have a 'sad' play-list on my itunes. I won't list them all (honestly, I haven't! lol) but:
Who Wants to Live Forever - Queen
In the Sun - Joseph Arthur
Leave Out All the Rest - Linkin' Park
Nobody Knows - Tony Rich Project
Folding Stars - Biffy Clyro (I believe it was written about the death of the singer's mother. I relate it to my Mum's death so it always has me in tears)
Machines - Biffy Clyro
Not As We - Alanis Morissette
Into the West - Annie Lennox (I can't listen to this anymore now as we played it at Mum's funeral)
The Drugs Don't Work - The Verve
Everybody Hurts - REM
Too Much Love Will Kill You - Queen
Hear You Me - Jimmy Eat World
The King - Hard-Fi
Mad World - Gary Jules
Ordinary World - Duran Duran (another one I associate with Mum's death!)
Fix You - Coldplay
The Scientist - Coldplay
Because of You - Kelly Clarkson
How To Save A Life - The Fray
A Bad Dream - Keane (because I can't hear this without thinking of the scene in Scrubs)
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor0 -
Over you - Written by Blake Shelton and sung by his wife Miranda Lambert.0
-
Don't take the girl - Tim McGraw
This one makes me cry every time I hear it.0 -
Terrible Things- Mayday Parade
Everything's an Illusion- Mayday Parade
Love both of these! Terrible things makes me cry every time though.0 -
Top of the World -- Patty Griffin Seriously just about the saddest song I've ever heard.0
-
Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Conner
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Hurt - Johnny Cash
Don't Wanna Miss a Thing - Aerosmith
Probably more but those are the first I could think of
IMHO - the Jeff Buckley version of Hallelujah is the best - closely followed by K.D. Lang. Nobody else should be allowed to sing it.0 -
Oh, also, Dinner at Eight by Rufus Wainwright.0
