Skipping rope will kick your butt. It's one of the better cardio workouts that doesn't require a lot of space or equipment. After my divorce, I started skipping rope on the driveway outside while my 1-year-old was asleep. I lost a good twenty pounds that month. After that, I started jogging/running. I should have kept up with the rope... I would never have put that weight back on!

I skip a lot when the weather is nice - in my garden (to the neighbour's amusement) It is a fab cardio workout. It is also amazing how quickly you can build up the stamina to do it for longer. On my first attempt a couple of years ago, I was lucky if I did 5 minutes, can do it as long as my attention holds now!!!

A lot of my DVD's have you do it even without a rope. My heart rate gets up there in a hurry. It's tough tho if you have bad joints.

Haha - did you want DVDs that uses the rope ? They have those too

But, you're right Jumping rope is really high impact - start out slow & pick a softer surface if you can (exercise mat?).
