Not exercising

Does anyone find it difficult to not go over your calorie count if you haven't been exercising? I hurt my knee 2 weeks ago and it's hard for me to rest it enough for it to heal so I haven't been able to exercise. I have been trying extra hard to keep my calorie count low to make sure I don't start gaining weight again but I am finding it more difficult than when I do exercise.

Any tips?

    Nothing you don't know...
More water, healthy lower calorie snacks (veggies, fruits, etc), eating 5-6 times a day.

    Get better soon.

Geez, AGAIN Carolyn, I wish I DID have some advice for you! I know that when I started here, I saw right away that I'd HAVE to exercise, in order to up my numbers enough for what I wanted to eat each day. I just logged my foods for today, and I was "ok" till I added my nightly snack of Edy's slow churned, no sugar added Fudge Tracks. NOW I HAVE to exercise or do without, which would be pretty a horrible thought! :noway:
Again though, sorry about your injury, hope it's better soon!

Remember even when you "go over", depending where your goals are set, you're probably not over your maintenance calories, so you shouldn't gain. Also (and this may be my own flawed logic) your body does need energy to repair itself, so maybe maintenance as you heal wouldn't be so bad.

But, yeah. . .no exercise is hard in a lot of ways. I had a muscle injury a few years ago and the only thing that kept me resting was thinking: "If you push too hard, you'll hurt it worse, and have to rest longer."

    :flowerforyou:
  • Exactly! If I don't rest, this depressing injury will just drag on and on and maybe even turn into a real injury that could last months if not years.

Thing is with the built in calorie deficit is that I am at my ideal weight right now. I mean, everyone always thinks they could lose another pound or two, but realistically, people work hard to get a body like mine (I dont want to sound conceited or anything, im just saying..). I got to this weight by eating a certain way and exercising, a LOT. So now, 2, 3, 4 weeks of no exercise and a difficulty keeping my calorie count the way it was is freaking me out.

Does anyone know how long it takes to gain the weight back? I have this paranoia that it takes like, a day haha, but I know logically that that is ridiculous.

I am not sure about weight gain. I know muscle memory is affected in a matter of weeks though... :indifferent:

    Can you do light weights?
That's not for the sake of calorie burning as much as just taking advantage of the "rest" time
  • Well I have been for my upper body and abdominals. It has been better than nothing for sure, but the calories burned are not significant. I wish I could lift weights with my lower body, or do some squats or something but any bending of the knee can be painful.

So I am doing something, but it is a lot less than I am used to.

But you will end up with diesel arms!!

I bet if you sat in a chair and did arms with 3-5 lb weights, constantly for 30 min you would burn calories. I wore my HRM to PT and burned 200 cals in the hour I was there.

Use a ball and work on core strength too. I did push ups from the ball, chest. bakc and arms.......just holding myself steady got my heart beat up

Hope your healed up very fast!:flowerforyou:
  • Thanks so much for the advice! I really need to do that... go to the gym and just pump as hard as I can and not be lazy... I will get my heart rate up that way. It's just so much more work it seems than going for a run.

I definitely won't get diesel arms hahaha, Ill make sure of that!

I usually don't exercise, though lately I have been more often as it is summer. I have heard several times that 70 - 80% of losing weight is nutrition. I stick to 1200 calories a day, not exercising by incorporating more veggies in every meal, interspersing veggie/fruit snacks in between. Drinking plenty of water, and planning my meals ahead.

You can totally do cardio in a chair. Look on youtube for some chair workouts. Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3jhx4F0oAc

You could baby your hurt knee, and still burn some calories. :)

I would be going overy my calories every day if I didn't do some form of exercise to burn a few extra calories.
