Plateaux?

Has anyoe reached a plateau yet, at what point in your journey have you encountered this and how have you overcome it? I know in about 5-10 lbs I'll be hitting one and even though it's a ways away, I want to become mentally prepared for it so I can blast through it with ease and continue on with my goals. When I reach plateaux in my workouts, I've been able to break through concentrating on a spcific motivator, but that's usually in the moment. With weight loss, it's a gradual thing and I haven't had much success with facing a weight loss hurdle that will take an extensive amount of time to overcome. I end up feeling like Bill Murry in Groundhogs Day and eventually just give up and spiral back to where I started, usually gaining an extra 5-10 pounds with it. This has been a difficult cycle for me for the past 5-7 years now and I know my body can't handle jumping from one extreme to another. I'm just asking for some advice so I can prepare for "war" and overcome it this time!

I've had this issue more than once. Usually I boost proteins and reduce carbs and sugars. I'll also add a "mini" workout into my day of 15 minutes or so in the morning, afternoon, whenever of walking or biking or some ab work, something low key just before a meal.

I have also found that boosting my water intake helps considerably.

    Good luck!

I have reached the dreaded plateau and have been stuck here for the last 5 months :( I have yet to figure out how to overcome it. I know most people say change up your routine or eatting to "shock" the body. So right now I trying HITT in my cardio excercising and switching to lifting really heavy. So we'll see how that works. I hit mine about 3lbs away from my goal although several years ago when I had originally lost this weight I flew past this stage with no problems and was afraid of losing too much weight back then. My how getting older changes things! LOL

I am in my second plateau. The first lasted about 5 months. This one is almost at 6 months now (and counting). I have changed up a lot of stuff, I stopped counting for a while, I have upped exercise, I have slacked in exercise. I have no advice. I am currently trying to phase into eating more "real" foods and less processed, and cutting back on carbs. We'll see.

From what I have seen IRL and around the forums, men don't seem to plateau quite like women do, so maybe you will get lucky.

I have hit a couple of plateaus but seem to have found the key (well for me anyways) :-)

If I eat 4 days high protein and then 5th day have high carbs low protein it seems to keep it working for me.

My hubby is an exd bodybuilder and he suggested a `refeed` every few days to keep my body working.

May not work for you but mybe worth a try?

I am in one now and have been since mid March!!! Reading thru some posts today I came across this:
    http://www.fat2fitradio.com/ <
Go here and listen to the Audio Clip titled " Break Weight Loss Plateaus "

Very Interesting! I have decided to up my calories to 500 less than the BMR suggests. It didnt make sense to me before but this new way of thinking is starting to sink in. (i figured the way to lose weight is to eat less and exercise more- which i have done and have lost nothing, am crabby with hunger pangs and exhausted from 7 day a week 5am workouts)

I have also heard others mention a sight called 'eat more to weigh less' but have not had time to check it out yet.....

My other option is to start lopping off limbs to see the scale move.....

I had a plateau for about 6 weeks now. Then I ate less carbs and a lot more protein. My weightloss started back up. I guess, my body needs a lot more energy to burn all that protein.

I'm working on the fat2fitradio.com program. So far, I've gained, whihc they say will happen. But, I am really much happier. I have so much energy that it's ridiculous. I actually feel like a normal person now. And, I am trusting the process. I increased my cals by 1000 per day. Sounds like a lot, but accroding to the calculations, that's what my body needs to drop significant weight. Read up about it. And, by the way, the guy above says BMR, I think he means TDEE. If you eat below BMR, that's really bad.I eat at my goal weight TDEE. So, if I just keep doing that, I'll get there. At least that's what they say. read up on it. They describe the plateau situation to a T.

You might want to try carbo loading when you get to your plateau. I only have a basic understanding of the process but here it goes. You eat your normal amount of carbohydrates on the first day and then no carbs outside of fruits and veggies on the next day then repeat this cycle twice more until the seventh day and then on the seventh day eat what you want (within your calorie range) and then start the process over again. The idea behind carbo loading is that you fill your body with its regular amount of carbs ( which are necessary energy) on your first day and then the next you starve it for carbs (not food just carbs) which makes it use its fat stores for energy. I learned about this on the DR. Oz show by his guest Chris Powell. Chris Powell is the trainer on the "Extreme Makover Weightloss Edition" TV show.
