So I have been doing the elliptical for about 50-55 minutes a day. The machine says I burn around 500 calories. Does this seem high or low. I have been logging what it says to be on the safe side.

I know I should get a HRM but not in the budget yet. I am 247lb, 5'7" and 25, My hjeart rate stays at about 155 during the exercise session.

Any thoughts?

That sounds about right. I'm 151 lbs and I burn about 425 for 60 minutes. Being heavier, you would burn more than me.

I weigh 155 and am 5'5". My HRM says I burn between 650- 750 for 1 hour of exercise but that is with my heart rate really up between 160-180. So it sounds like yours might be correct give or take a few calories.

    Seems about right.

Here is how I determine it based on my time on the elliptical: I basically take my time (i.e. 45 minutes) and if you are working at a pretty decent pace add a zero onto it and that will be your approx. cals burned. (45 mins = roughly 450 cals) I always shoot to burn more than that by pushing myself a little harder and seeing how much I can get past what I should be burning.

The calorie burn will go up or down depending on how hard you are working.

    Cheers!
