Just wondering....

Reading all the posts about BMR and calorie deficits got me thinking. The heaviest I have been has been about 167 lbs (for at least 4 or 5 years). I never went over that. When I figured out the BMR to maintain 165 it said I needed about 1700 calories (1666 to be exact). What's weird is that I know I was eating way above that. Like probably 3000 calories- I know gross. But I was able to eat a whole box of girl scout cookies some days plus three heavy meals AND snacks. Yet I stayed at 165-167. I sure was not burning it off sitting on facebook and working from my computer. I house cleaned and did yard work once a week but that is pretty much it. So, I am wondering why I was not steadily gaining more and more weight? Don't get me wrong. I am VERY glad I did not get even heavier- I am just wondering how I pulled that off.

must have a good metabolism, and I doubt you ate a box of cookies every day. Your appetite probably fluxuated.

You said BMR was 1700. This isn't your total amount of calories burned in a day- just what your body will burn on its own with you doing nothing.... So your Total Daily Energy Expenditure was probably quite high... Remember that you were carrying around that 167 pounds when you did things as well... Not to say you were 'working out' without knowing it

As well, when I had this occur for me, as I look at it... I believe I was generally gaining and losing and gaining and losing a few pounds... During periods of less effort or more stress... Voila added weight... During periods of activity it would drop off without me really noting it.... Had I really been docile, I believe I would simply have kept gaining - even if it would have been slow.... Just my thoughts on me...

Thanks. What both of you said makes sense. I figured maybe I was doing something right without knowing it lol. And true I ate different every day and some days I was carrying my kids around a lot or I guess just with housework and taking the kids to the park I burned something. Still, I feel pretty lucky. I think things could have gotten a lot worse because looking back my habits were very careless.
