tracking with a pedometer

Does anyone know how to track/record exercise with a step counter? I am a SAHM and walk around the house and yard what seems like endlessly and my feet kill me by the end of the day. Surely this counts for something! I could not begin to guess how long I'm walking.

I've just joined 6 days ago :) I didn't find a match when I searched the forums.

Thanks ~ Jaime

Pedometers are really easy to use and not expensive. All you need to do when you first get it is to measure your "normal" step, put it on your belt and go.
You could then log your day under "walking" using the calories shown on the pedometer.

That would be my way, but maybe someone has a better suggestion...

Ok, that sounds like it will work. Thanks Villene!

Remember though... not all pedometers count cals though. Mine only does distance and steps. Of course you get what you pay for. Mine was only $5 at walmart

My pedometer is very simple...it only tracks steps. I haven't figured out how to convert it to calories or minutes to log it into MFP. I wish I could afford one of those HRM's. But Jaime, if you're walking around all day, you should have your lifestyle set to something other than sedentary. That will give you credit for all that walking without you having to log it. You're right... it does count.

Just remember what ever you set your activity level at accounts for some of you daliy activity. If you set it at seditary that you sit most of the day some of your calorie burn is built in. MFP takes in to account normal daily activity towards your calories they give you. Anything above my normal daily activity is what should be counted (to a point)
Just be careful to not count to many calories burned or you will set yourself up to fail.

    Hope this helps

This conversion will give you miles ... for your steps

You will have to use some "generic" speed for MFP though

My pedometer doesn't track calories (and if you just logged that you'd over count anyway since a lot of those are your "normal daily activity" and MFP already counts them). This is what I do to account for the steps I take in a day.

EDIT: If anything, I may be under logging my calories using this method since I've been losing at more than the 1 lb/week that I've got MFP set to and I don't eat too far below my net goal on a daily basis. But I'd rather undershoot exercise cals than overshoot them!

I had the same question, I have a pedometer built into my Ipod Nana and it tells me distance, steps and calories. I did the BMR under MFP apps and it told me that my body, doing nothing all day burns so many calories, and I am eating a little under that. So should I not count my pedometer calories as exercise?

If you end up with a distance value, you can roughly estimate the calories burned using this: http://www.runnersworld.com/weight-loss/how-many-calories-are-you-really-burning-0?page=single. That would be if you want to add a number onto a "sedentary" setting. The alternative would be to change your activity level on mfp to reflect that you are quite active.
