Exercising without walking?

I recently decided to diet and get healthy so i started to walk this mile long track by my house. The problem is that i don't really have any "workout gear" at first i thought it shouldn't be a problem. BIG Mistake after walking for a while i noticed my pants would rub against my thighs and they would hurt, so I'm thinking about buying bike shorts because from what I read they help to stop that problem.
The problem is that while I have to wait for them to ship I don't know if i should keep walking or just do other exercises until i get them.
Will not walking for about a week affect my diet in a bad way?
