How did you get your current job?
Right know I'm searching for a marketing job and it's pretty tough out there being a recent grad (2011:sad: ) with <1 year experience. I'd like to know if you just applied numerous times and finally got one or did someone refer you? I'm doing all I can right now, I even have a blog/linkedin/twitter, all the social networks is tailored for employment. Too bad MFP isn't hiring marketers, it would have been nice

Networking. Have you let everyone (ev-e-ry-one) you know that you are looking for a job?0

I'm going into marketing. Still in my senior year. I find this kind of depressing! lol0

craiglist, dice.com. put your resume out there. if headhunters call you, talk to them, let them do some legwork for you.0

Been there since my last semester in college. Started the internship and stayed. Still there after 7 years0

I sent out 145 resumes in my career field, using word of mouth, craigs list and sometimes just walking into places I had always wanted to work at. I found my current job on craigs list and LOVE it. Keep looking there are jobs out there just harder to find!0

The VP where I used to work resigned to run his own company.
A year later, this VP called me and asked me to come to work for him at his new company.
I did.
That was in '98.
We've worked together since '80.0 -

If I could do it over, I'd get a really long internship.0 -
"Marketing" is extremely broad, by the way. There are lots of specific industry sites that post jobs if you know where to look.. also, does your city have it's own job network? Do some digging around, and go to networking events via the groups you join in LInkedIn. It's not enough just to have a profile.0

I'm into internet marketing / social media. So I figured networking through social media is working, but results aren't as expected. It's hard out here even though I'm located in the Silicon valley area where everything digital is happening.
Still haven't tried networking events, I think I'm going to do that soon0 -
I got pregnant...twice.
it doesn't pay much, but has it's rich rewards.0 -
lol, I am a cashier, I got my job because of my looks, no joke. I have gone above and beyond to show that I'm not just a pretty face.0

I just got my latest marketing post through a shop job!
Like everyone seems to be finding job hunting was tough and I took whatever would pay the bills, the company then decided they wanted a marketeer so I was straight in there.
Past roles (when times were less tough) came through unpaid work experience, recruitment agencies and numerous visits to agencies with my portfolio. x0 -
I'm currently a child care associate in a state-certified child care facility, but I'm also a basic EMT and will be a paramedic in December. Didn't have to jobhunt much, thankfully, for my daycare job, but I know I'll have some serious legwork looking for a good medic job. I have zero experience working as a basic (I know...people HATE young paramedics with no real experience) so that's going to make my future hunt extremely challenging.0

I lost my previous job after being there for 11-1/2 years. I recently got my current job as an Accounts Receivable Specialist through a temp agency, Accountemps. It's a temp job but I'm hoping it will turn into a permanent job.
Good luck to you.0 -
Created my own. A handful in 100 artists actually get a paying gig at a company, the rest of us are starving freelancers. Especially us who don't have the patience, discipline, or will to assimilate and finish college0

Luck. I applied back home and couldn't even get a response. When we moved here, got in and busted my *kitten* to keep it.0

Unemployed since 2008. I got one interview and the guy never showed up I felt like a huge *kitten*. I had some professional place do my resume for me. And it just didn't work. I still apply for jobs but people think I'm lazy because I didn't work for a while. And they ask questions and make me feel bad by making rude comments. I have anxiety and don't communicate very well. It doesn't help with employement. I want to do landscaping I apply every spring. I can't find anything because I'm an overweight female so I must be weak as **** and absolutely useless for any kind of physical work. I pick up scrap metal in peoples trash and bring it to the scrap yard. They give me money for it. Maybe next summer I can open a chip stand or something. I am not going to sit on my *kitten* and do nothing. I can't find a job I have to create my own.0

I started out doing a little contract writing for my current employer and as I proved myself and filled a hole in the business, the work grew into a casual job, then a permanent part-time one and now a full time one where it is so busy that it can be difficult to take a day off! My boss chased me because we were on an advisory committee together.0

I agree with networking! I work in marketing (I'm currently an intern, as I'm working towards completing my degree.) My mom is the manager of recruitment where I work. Never be afraid to utilize every single connection you've ever made.
Also, the Canadian job market isn't quite as bad as in America - although it's still not stellar.0 -
Long story really…. Here is the cliff notes version:
I was working as an Office Manager at a Country Club when I felt like there was just no more room for advancement. While they treated me well and gave me some great salary increases it still was not enough. I started applying for other jobs. I emailed my resume out to hundreds of places…. I rec’d a call for a Data Entry position. While the work itself didn’t sound glamorous the salary was more than what I was earning at the time. So, I quit my job and moved on. I was only in that role for about 6 months when the manager approached me and asked if I wanted to go assist one of our clients (a Financial Institution) temporarily with a new project they were implementing …
I was only supposed to assist for 2 weeks, but that 2 weeks turned into 2 months and then 2 years… Then after those 2 years the client offered me a position…so here I am 6 years later and going strong!
…..the rest is history….and I can’t say I made the wrong decision. I love my job and the people I work with. They treat me well here.0 -
I started my own businesses. I got a great contact who has contacts who has contacts . . . .
It's all about networking and who you know.0 -
I lost my job the first week of the new year. I gave my resume to anybody and everybody who would take it. Even if it's not your field it could end up in the hands of someone who is. I got my job due to I knew someone in the company. Networking is the way to go these days. They wanna know you are reliable. Good luck!0

I googled "German American company" or something like that... came across this company. Sent them an email and told them I'd be moving from Indy to Orlando in two months if they had any openings. Had an email asking to call for an interview withing 2 hours of sending my email....
Since then I've left the job to move to Germany - came back and had my job back within 2 days...
Just sayin' the jobs are out there, sometimes it just takes "the right company" where they need exactly what YOU have to offer. Accentuate anything special you have to offer - even if it doesn't relate to marketing directly. I work for a law firm, no special training in this field, but I am bilingual in German/English. Find a nieche...!0 -
Network. Go to business seminars. Try companies you wouldn't traditionally think of (have you looked at non-profits? we use a lot of social media). Try and get informational interviews with people who have the position you'd like- just call them and tell them your situation and ask if you could come in for 30 minutes or so to do an informational interview!
It takes hundreds of resumes and cover letters to get a job these days! It's not easy, but you'll get there!0 -
